Tighter Grip was an idea many years in the making and a program long over due. Tighter Grip was a concept developed by Benjamin Bryant and a few other African American male leaders at GA State who saw the need for a group to address the problems facing African-American males in college. Over the next year, 7 great men, : Benjamin Bryant, Charmers Malcolm, Cedric Allen, Tourgee Simpson, Miguel Flanders, Brian Greene, and Douglas Zimmerman, also known as our Elders, began developing a program to address these problems with a goal of providing positive solutions.

In the Summer 2003, a new Movement began, as Tighter Grip became a chartered Organization at Georgia State University. Tighter Grip has grown to a membership of over ninety students that support the need for African- American Males to be represented positively, not only at the university, but in the community as well. Tighter Grip is not just an organization, it is a brotherhood that was developed by planting one seed and letting it grow. It started out as a dream and continued as a movement encouraging a tighter grip on academics, interpersonal relationships, but most important, and life.
